Is the New iPad Screen Too Good for the Web? Brian X. Chen asks for New York Times.

Other than the costs of upgrading, another obstacle is the time that a Web site takes to load. “Even though we’ve upgraded the quality of resolution on the iPad, our Internet connections are still the same,” Mr. Hudson said. That means Web sites with images and videos optimized for the new iPad could take longer to load, which isn’t ideal for many companies running Web sites. This isn’t a problem for iPad apps, where images can be stored locally to reduce loading times, he said. (On its own site, Apple is loading the lower-resolution images and then replacing them with higher-resolution versions on the new iPad. )

But old images on the new iPad won’t look worse, just higher resolution images will look better. Perhaps Mr Chen couldn’t tell the difference?

SAN FRANCISCO—According to industry sources, this news article is generating a veritable bonanza of highly lucrative advertising revenue by mere virtue of the fact that it mentions Apple’s new iPad.

“Current estimates show that the particular article I am being quoted in at this very moment began to accumulate thousands of dollars in ad-based profits as soon as the words ‘new iPad’ appeared in the headline,” said market analyst Jonathan Bowers, who single-handedly and out of thin air created cold hard cash for a media organization simply by adding that the new Apple iPad will feature a high-definition screen and an improved processor.

“Furthermore, any subsequent mention of the new iPad in this article—as well as any mention of the fact that preorders for the device start today—is resulting in increased reader traffic and, thus, increased revenues for your company’s ad-based business model.”

At press time, new iPad, new iPad, new iPad, new iPad, new iPad, new iPad, new iPad, new iPad, new iPad, new iPad.

Let’s see if it really works.

Had dinner with former CNN war-correspondent Peter Arnett, and he has this to say about Steve Jobs when I commented that the latter was an inventor and designer:

“Well, Steve is a great marketer, he was great at selling things!”

But according to Jobs’ biographer Isaacson in an interview, “He could have retired any time. But until he died he was still there, working on what would a TV set look like, what would a great camera look like, what textbooks would be like,” said Isaacson about Jobs’ dedication to Apple. “He didn’t need to do that, but I think he was driven by the desire to create great products, not the desire to make money.”

In his biography, Steve Jobs alluded to the fact that he had figured out how to solve the problem of an ‘integrated’ television.“I’d like to create an integrated television set that is completely easy to use,” Jobs told Isaacson, “It would be seamlessly synced with all of your devices and with iCloud.”

Jobs went on to elaborate that “it will have the simplest user interface you could imagine. I finally cracked it.”

Can’t wait to see how my TV will look like.

Since bloggers and tech pundits were given special, one-on-one sessions with Apple’s senior executives, it is obvious that even New York Times need to learn to produce high quality tech reports that do not twist facts for better drama. It’s recent iEconomy series report about Foxxconn that gave Change.org a reason to organize a disruptive event at AppleStore outlets.

Foxxconn produces phones and computers for Dell, Nokia and IBM.

Yes, the Little Big Disk had to be connected to the wall for power.

Now I know why is Apple selling a 2-meter Thunderbolt cable: so you can have the false sense of mobility as long as you are within the 2-meter radius of the drive.

Apple, whatever happened to “elegance”?

I cannot help but not notice that there was no mention of Amazon or Kindle in the keynote address delivered by Phil Schiller at the January 19 Apple Education Event in New York. And also curiously absent at the keynote, was desktop publishing software giant Adobe, as Adobe’s InDesign will be affected by what Apple would release.

Apple obviously know where they stand — the iPad is in a class of its own — and it didn’t need to throw mud at others to prove the point. And it’s about education after all, or is it?

On that note, I cannot help but also think about what other things we can do with iBooks Author, the free authoring tool Apple has released shortly after the keynote where we can use to produce interactive multimedia products:

JOURNALISM Imagine how it can transform the way bloggers and independent news outlets produce iPad publications. Now you will no longer need to have a team of Xcode riders or HTML5 coders to produce iPad books, all you need are good designers and layout artists.

PUBLIC MESSAGES In countries where the mainstream media is controlled by the authorities, this tool will allow NGOs or alternative media groups to produce high-quality publications for general distribution. Imagine Apple launches a sub USD200 iPad for education, would that be a game changer?

But I agree, though not in an explosive way, this is going to transform the publishing world.

With China’s Xunlei and iQiyi IPTV services gearing up to take over the world, Tuduo and Youku seems to be eyeing at the huge consumer market that used to be dominated by license-carrying broadcast stations.
